PracticeMaster Q&A: Formatting Report Writer Output

We created a custom report in Report Writer and want to draw more attention to a specific field when the report is run. Is there any way to make this field bold?

Yes there is! There are specialized string functions that can be used to change the output of report fields so that they stand out from the other text of the report.

To make a field bold in Report Writer

  1. From the Reports menu, select Report Writer.
  2. Select the desired report and click the Modify button.
  3. On the User Defined Fields tab
    1. Click the add_field (New Field) button.
    2. Enter a Field Name.
    3. Leave the Field Type at the default setting of Alpha.
    4. Click on the Function button.
    5. Select BOLD$ and click Insert.
    6. In the Default Value field
      1. Place your cursor inside the closed parenthesis ().
      2. Click the Field button.
      3. Select the field you want to bold and click Insert.
    7. Click OK.
  4. On the Image Layout tab
    1. Select the field you want to bold and click the  (Delete) button. This will remove it from the report.
    2. Click the add_field (Add Field) button.
    3. On the User Defined tab, select the field we created in the steps above and click Insert.
    4. Position the field as desired.
  5. Press Ctrl+S.

Your report output will now print the desired field as bold.

Note: Other rich text functions available include underline (ULINE$), italic (ITALIC$), and strikethrough (STRIKE$). For a list of available functions, refer to Knowledge Base Article R10750, “PracticeMaster Report Writer, Filter, and WorkFlow Functions.”
