PracticeMaster Q&A: Adding Decimals to Key Type

July 2019    Tags: ,

We have a client that we have been working with for a long time. He has another matter for us, but his Client ID has maxed out at 402.99. Is there any way for me to extend the decimal side of his Client ID so we don’t have to create a new client number for this client?

You can change the number of decimal places in Client IDs via Change Key Type. This function is exclusive and requires all users to be out of the software before it can be performed.

To add decimal places to the key type

  1. From the Maintenance menu, point to Renumber and select Change Key Type.
  2. In the Decimal Places section, enter the desired New Decimal Places.
  3. In the Insert Zeros section, select Beginning if you want to add zeros to the beginning of the matter number (e.g., client 402.99 will become 402.099), or select End if you want to add zeros to the end of the matter number (e.g., client 402.99 will become 402.990).
  4. Click OK to make the change, and the software will update all Client IDs to reflect your new change.

For more information on changing the Key Type, refer to Knowledge Base Article R11049, “Changing the Key Type or Decimal Places.”
