Billing Q&A: Tabs3 Timer Options

June 2019    Tags: ,

The attorneys at our firm use the timer in the Tabs3 fee entry window to track how long they have been on specific tasks for their clients. We recently changed our policy to charge by the quarter hour for each task, rather than charging the actual time. However, when an attorney uses the timer, the actual time is added to the hours. Is there any way to automatically round up to the quarter hour?

In Tabs3 Customization, there are timer options that allow you to set minimum hours and an amount by which to increment when you go past the minimum.

If the timer amount is less than the specified Minimum, the software will round up to the minimum increment specified. For example, if the Minimum specified is .25 (15 minutes), and the task is six minutes, it will be rounded up to 15 minutes.

The Increment setting allows you to specify the portion of an hour you want to round up to. For example, if the Increment specified is .25 and the task is 18 minutes, it will be rounded up to 30 minutes.

To set the timer options to round up time in 15 minute increments

  1. From the Utilities menu, select Customization.
  2. From the Options tab, in the Timer Options section:
    1. Enter a Minimum of .25.
    2. Enter an Increment of .25.
  3. Once you have made your desired change simply save and then close the Customization window.
