December 2020    Tags:

Our new attorney is licensed in two states, one of which charges sales tax. How can I set up sales tax for only certain clients?

When configuring the software to charge sales tax, there are three locations that need to be set up:

  • Customization
  • Client Information
  • Tcode file

To enable sales tax in Customization

  1. From the Utilities menu, select Customization.
  2. From the Rates tab, in the Sales Tax group:
    1. Select the appropriate check boxes (i.e., Tax Services, Tax Expenses, and/or Tax Advances).
    2. In the Rate fields, enter the appropriate tax rates.
  3. Press Ctrl+S.

To enable sales tax for a single client

  1. From the File menu, point to Open and select Client.
  2. On the Billing Options tab, in the Sales Tax section, select the applicable Fee, Exp, and/or Adv tax.
  3. Press Ctrl+S.

To enable sales tax for a tcode

  1. From the File menu, point to Open and select Miscellaneous.
  2. From the Tcode tab, select the Tcode for which you want to assess tax. (Note: Tax will only be assessed on this tcode for clients who have sales tax enabled.)
  3. Select the Charge Sales Tax check box.
  4. Press Ctrl+S.
  5. Repeat steps 2 – 4 for each tcode.
